Cargills Bank files legal action to prevent circulation of illegally obtained data from cyber attack

  • Colombo Magistrate orders TRCSL to take action

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has been directed by the Chief Magistrate’s Court of Colombo to block access to all websites and social media accounts which contain and/or publish and/or release illegally obtained data of Cargills Bank PLC.

This was following Cargills Bank PLC instituting action bearing No. 43022/1/25 before the Chief Magistrate’s Court of Colombo on 4 April under Section 24 of the Online Safety Act No. 9 of 2024.

All internet service providers of Sri Lanka and the TRCSL were named as the respondents of the matter.

The matter was supported before the learned Magistrate and by way of conditional order dated 4 April 2025, the three prayers were granted in favour of Cargills Bank PLC.

Geeth Karunarathna, Manujaya De Silva, and Nisal Dulmith appeared on behalf of the Petitioner bank, Cargills Bank PLC.

The matter was fixed for notice returnable on 21 April 2025.
